Doing it maself!

okay, so the story is:
i have not retightened since the first week of september. I usually get them retightened every 1.5-2 months however, i live 9 hours away from my loctitian (the closest sisterlocks consultant) and i missed my last appointment because i managed to catch some silly virus and couldnt make it. WELL! now am left with my matty locks that are determined to unite if i dont get up and do something,.

Problem is_ i am a student and i cant make it down to see my loctitian till the end of December (my exams are done on the 21st) so! whats a girl to do?

I have not taken the retightening course and i was actually scheduled to do that at my next meeting with my loctitian.

I have decided to take matters into my own hands.

worst case scenerio: my locks break off and i have to start over
best case scenerio: i learn a new lesson, and gain a scence of independence, oh and maybe save money in the future!
I got myself a plastic children's needle (i got the idea off of a felow blogger) and i got started...
here is a video (sorry for the quality)

15-17 months

up here you see my multitoned locks... i dyed my locks jet black for a while, then stopped. I honestly wish my haircolour was even lighter, i like the contrast. These pics were all taken between 15-17 months of having my locks. oh and in that one pic too, you can see that i desperately neeeeed to retighten them

Here we go with updates!

Okay so i havent bloged in a while... here is an update:

The pic above and the one below (with me in yellow) was taken sometime in May 2009. My locks were 10 months old. I am not very creative so when i need to go out partying lol, i tend to just do the good ol'side upsweep...

The picture abouve (in the wrap-dress) was when my locks were a year old (the date noted on the pic is incorrect). I used to ddye my locks jet black back then so, you'd see how dark they look.

This pic was taken when my locks were 11 months old (white and pink)

lastly, this pic was taken when my locks were 8 months old. I had just dyed them too i think

Lints

OMG!!!
I cant stand them!
Somehow I've managed to accumulate some in my hair YET AGAIN!

The last time I had some was in December when a loctitian had to take out some of the locks at the back because they had so much lint. She literally had to undo about 5 of my locks, and redo them.

Now they're back, at my temples. About 6 in total.

Oh gosh.

Anyway, I went up on good ol google and found some fellow sisterlockers' posts about the notorius lint!

Leighann's Sisterlocks
http://mysisterlocks.blogspot.com/2006/05/lint-plus-addendum.html

From here I picked up a few things
1.i should cover my hair before bed
NOT HAPPENING!
because i picked sisterlocks for convenience ooo! Aint noway am about to revert to covering my locks! (yeah, i know i can be sooo unreasonably stubborn).

2.Check them regularly
DITTO. will do.

3. Use a lint roller more frequently.
I shall try :)

Chosen Vessel's Sisterlock Pilgrimage:
http://chosenvessel06.blogspot.com/2007/12/attack-of-killer-lint.html

1. use tweezer on the lints
OKIES!

And i think (dont remember which of the sites i got this from)
- use less oil based hair care products.
Truth is, i dont use any in my hair but water. I just dont feel the need to add anything to my locks since it seems to have its own oils. I used to use the sisterlocks spray but i also used to get alot more lints, so i feel like am doing something right.

And while we're all sharing... here is another awesome idea...

When you do wash your hair, spend extra time rinsing the hairline areas. Sometimes, we wash the soaps and residues out of the body of the hair but then they settle at the hairlines, forming and attracting lints. :)
I sound sooo informative eh? See me see wahala, So why is it, that I cant seem to keep lints out of my hair?

Anyway, thanks to all the blogs I visited, I have new ideas onhow to win the battles against these lints.

Wish me luck!

Oh and I found Brunsli's blog and i loooove it!

Prelocks. Short Hair.

When I was a child, I was not allowed to grow my hair. I hated that. Though I wasnt aware of extentions (weave, extensions for braids and such) yet, I wanted my hair long. I'd wished that my parents would let me braid my hair. They did for a few years, and then I was entrusted into the barber's chair again.

Then I moved to Canada, and was allowed to experiement with weave. I could never get it right. I hated it.
And the desire to be... different, haunted me.

So, I walked into the barber's shop once. I was 16.
I walked in, said these words
"Can you give me a hair cut? Cut it all... leave an inch"
And that was it.

The next few days were dreadful and exhilirating.
I was made fun of, but I loved it. I did.
Something about being told that I look silly, makes me feel SOOOO good!

Must be the Aquarius in me.

Anyway, I've been cutting and shaving and experimenting EVER since.

Locks n Friends.

These pics, are of me and some friends.
You'd think it was easy going out with locks, wouldnt you?
If not, then you know better.
Its easy now.
But it wasnt always so.
I used to be anxious, excited, nervous and subtly insecured about wearing them. Because I wasnt sure what I looked like with them.

But confidence, and security, comes with time.

In the start

I was excited. I paid $500 to get my locks installed. The only other things I'd ever paid more for was for courses, cars, and my dog. I couldnt believe it, but I wanted it.
Besides, I got a good deal i think. Because other loctitians quoted me as much as $850. But my locktitian only charged $500.
When I spoke with my loctitian over the phone, I knew she was to be the one. She sounded confident. She sounded resourceful. I picked her.
But I had to wait to have my hair grow long enough. THAT was hard. Because am so used to doing whatever with my hair, it was difficult, leaving my hair be.

And that brought me to another issue I had. If I was to lock my hair, will I be able to stand having thesame hair for long?I wasnt sure, but I was tired of wondering.

I had wanted dreadlocks since I was very young. And even more so, when i became a teenager. I once shaved my hair in highschool. I wanted that.
I wanted my hair natural.
And when it grew and I'd see my curls, and my texture ... oh my goodness. I loved it.

But then I wanted more.
So locks, it was.
